This guide is focus on moving from Redis to Valkey on my Ubuntu Server 24.04. There is no official documentation on how to setup Valkey via the binary, so this guide will help you to get started with Valkey. Which in my case will replace my Redis servers.

Security of a system is often overlooked or not considered important enough. Some might think not about the possible consequences, which might result in a hacked or compromised server. Maybe sensitive data gets stolen or encrypted with major consequences.

Welcome back, this will be the 3^rd part of new server series. In the previous parts I assembled the server and prepared the machine with Ubuntu Server. I configured the basics things like; networking, RAID setup, E-Mail and more. In case you missed that: read Part I and Part II.

Today, we will finish the job with installing and configuring all the services we love so much. Again, I included a Table of Contents for convenience reasons, since it quite a long article. But hopefully the table will help you to navigate around.

My current server is 15 years old, and time for an upgrade! Finally! After all, adding additional memory is not good enough and we hitting the limits of the old hardware. We will replace the whole server from the ground-up.

I would like to talk about artificial intelligence (AI), GPT-3 to be specific. Has been a while since I posted an article, but I noticed an urge to write about GPT-3 🙂. Without further ado, let’s get into what GPT-3 is. And why this is such an important topic to discuss.

Lately I moved to my new home. My idea was to setup a good stable and high performance LAN network within my home. This project sounds pretty easy at first, but it was harder than I initially suspected it to be.

In this article I talk about my goals for this project. The list of materials to get you started and creating your own network. I will talk about some useful unix tools for network analysis. How-to setup your own NFS (Network File System) server. Last but not least, I will give some Linux network tweaking advise and share my future plans.

I was triggered by a name ‘OpenRCT2’ on the web. I was wondering if that was a game just like 0 A.D. (an open-source re-implementation of Age of Empires). And yep it was, OpenRCT2 stands for “Open-source RollerCoaster Tycoon II”.

I was thrilled when I discovered about OpenRCT2. It’s a re-implementation of the classic hit game called RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 from Infogrames (Atari). Only in US; Rollercoast Tycoon 2 sold 940,000 copies and earned $21.6 million by August 2006.

Developers who running PHP-enabled websites such as WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Magento or even PHP frameworks like Laravel and Symfony should know about the new major PHP version. As a developer you should think about switching to PHP7. I will talk about the how-to use it, some history, the benefits of PHP7 and finally how to get PHP7 on your system.
And uhm… what about PHP version 6?

About about 98% of the websites are still using PHP version 5.*.  PHP 5 is now more than 11 years old, so it’s time to move to PHP 7 and clean up obsolete functions. The PHP project has a list of deleted functions, which helps you porting PHP 5 to PHP 7 code. And list of removed APIs & extensions.

Niet lang geleden heb ik mijn server opnieuw opgezet. Ik maak gebruik van Debian 8 (Jessie) als Linux distributie, en heb veel verschillende services geïnstalleerd en geconfigureerd (waaronder een mail server, webmail, cloud storage en git). Gelukkig hield ik alles netjes bij in een logboek. Ik zou graag mijn stappen willen delen, zodat iedereen een eigen server kan opzetten.

Ik ga ervan uit dat je beschikt over enige basis kennis van GNU/Linux (Debian). Ook al beschik je niet tot nauwelijks over deze kennis, zou het toch mogelijk moeten zijn om deze handleiding stap voor stap te volgen.

SSH (Secure-shell) wordt gebruikt om remote in te loggen in een server of computer. Maar wist je dat je nog veel meer met SSH kunt doen? Naast remote inloggen, bied SSH ook ondersteuning voor het doorsturen van TCP poorten (tunnel), X11 verbindingen om je beeld door te sturen en tot slot bestandsoverdracht (wat via SFTP of SCP gaat).
We houden het in dit artikel bij het doorsturen van poorten, ook wel SSH tunneling genoemd.

Wat is SSH tunneling? En wat kun je er allemaal mee doen?

Afgelopen weken stond het internet er vol mee: de OpenSSL Hearbleed Bug.

Maar wat is precies het probleem? En waarom eigenlijk? Wat zijn de gevolgen en hoe heeft het ooit kunnen ontstaan?

Het laatste bericht is al weer een tijdje geleden, maar dat heeft ook zijn redenen. Mijn blog heeft nu namelijk een nieuw website ontwerp!

Ik hoop dat jullie hem mooi, overzichtelijk en duidelijk vinden. Daarnaast heb ik ook een eigen logo ontworpen. De website is nu ook “responsive”, dat houdt in dat de website geschikt is voor alle apparaten, zoals een computer en mobiele telefoon.

In Python (een programmeertaal) kun je soms tegen rare dingen aan lopen, soms verwacht je niet altijd wat je krijgt (hoewel het achteraf altijd wel uit te leggen is). Dit geld overigens voor alle programmeertalen op de wereld. 😉

Nu zijn we bezig plannen maken om te verhuizen, en bij het nieuw huis hoort nu eenmaal ook zaken zoals: verven, vloeren leggen, huis inrichten, noem het maar op.

Gelukkig heb je daar ook mooie online tools voor om je te helpen keuzes iets makkelijker te maken of gewoon leuk om mee te spelen. Ik gebruik grofweg twee tools, een tool die bedoeld is voor het ontwerpen van je woning in 3 dimensionaal (3D). En een aparte tool voor het combineren van kleuren (zoals de muur). Voor het laatste kwam ik een leuke online tool tegen genaamd “Color Visualizer”, deze is hier te gebruiken.

Ik kreeg onlangs de vraag of ik enkele handige commando’s wist voor op Ubuntu. Voor de mensen die niet weten wat Ubuntu is, dat is een besturingssysteem net als Windows of Mac OS X, maar deze is gebaseerd op GNU/Linux genaamd “Ubuntu Linux” Deze zogenaamde distributie is gratis te downloaden en te gebruiken. Goed alternatief voor Ubuntu is Linux Mint, ook tevens gratis te gebruiken.

Nadat mensen de Windows installatie hebben afgerond, krijg je vaak de vraag: “Wat is nu de beste anti-virus?”. Het antwoord die ik vaak geef is Avast Anti-Virus Free, deze kunt je hier vinden en downloaden.

De laatste tijd hoor ik veel verschillende mensen die graag Windows opnieuw willen installeren op hun computer / laptop. Helaas is de kennis vaak te beperkt om Windows opnieuw te kunnen installeren, tot vandaag tenminste 😉 Als je deze handleiding stap-voor-stap volgt kun je het voortaan gewoon zelf.

Deze volledige handleiding is bedoeld voor mensen die weinig/beperkt kennis hebben van ICT en graag hun computer opnieuw willen installeren. We gaan ervan uit dat je niet beschikt over een Windows 7 DVD. Kortom DE handleiding als je nog nooit Windows zelf opnieuw geïnstalleerd hebt.
